It’s not always necessary, though. Ordinarily, probate is required when the value of the estate exceeds a certain threshold, which in California is currently $184,500. Additionally, assets held solely in the deceased person’s name and not designated as payable on death (POD) or having joint ownership usually require probate.

A detailed list of these assets is then compiled and formally submitted to the court as part of a formal Inventory and Appraisal. The court reviews this document to ensure completeness and accuracy, and it serves as the foundation for subsequent stages like paying debts and distributing the remaining estate.
Consequently, it’s crucial to be thorough and meticulous during this stage. Missing even a single asset can lead to complications and potential legal challenges down the line.
